Duaine Clair "Bud" Bemis was born on April 4, 1925 to Clair and Bertha (Deuel) Bemis. He attended District 7 country school in Greenbush township, Mille Lacs County until 8th grade. He begin his career in trucking at an early age and that would span nearly 60 years. He married Helen Ann Smith on August 27, 1945. They had 5 children: Richard, Rose Ann, Robert, Randall and Kevin before their divorce in 1974. Bud married Phyllis Lustig on April 5, 1975 and made their home in Emily, MN. In 1975, he and his wife Phyllis and partner Darrel Genz opened the Log Cabin Bar in Emily, MN. They owned the bar until his retirement in 1993 when they began dividing their time between Minnesota and Texas.
Bud and Phyllis also purchased 17 acres of property between Emily Lake and Lake Mary, which had no road access. Bud received permits to build a road and a bridge to access the property. After the completion of the road and bridge, rain washed away the shoulders of the road, which made the canal to shallow for boats to pass. Bud had to hire dragline to take the dirt out of the canel. Bud had a large barn full of collectables and was home for his hobby of miniature donkeys.
He is survived by wife, Phyllis; four sons and daughter-in-law, Richard of Corpus Christi, Tx, Robert and Myra of Simi Valley, CA, Randy and Theresa of Foreston and Kevin of Crosby; one daughter and son-in-law, Roseann and Jeff Sanders of Coon Rapids; two stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Donnie Harrison-Miller and husband Al of Thousand Oaks, CA, and Val and Don Rude of Frostberg, MD; two brothers Clifford of Foley and Alden of Milaca; one sister, Bonita Wenberg of Detroit Lakes; nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
