He was born July 25, 1913, in Harvard, IL, the son of Harvey and Jennie Whiting Bates.
He married Virginia Louise Fuller Sept 5, 1936, in Homewood, IL.
He graduated from Harvard High School, where he was active in sports, holding for two years the high school track record for the mile in McHenry County. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Illinois.
He farmed in Illinois and Wisconsin, and held a defense job during World War II at A.O. Smith, Milwaukee. He later was employed by Fairbanks Morse, Beloit, Dean's Milk, Chemung, IL, and Borg Knitting Mill, Delavan. He retired from Sta-Rite Industries, Delavan, in 1978.
He drove a school bus in Darien and Delavan for several years. He was a member of Darien Community Baptist Church, where he had been a deacon. He formerly was active in American Field Service, Boy Scoutds and Civil Defense Auxiliary Police.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia, Darien; six children, Glenda Hill, Genoa City, Julian, Waterford, Brian, Genoa City, Charles, Delavan, Laurie Rightmire, Medford, and Lynette Buzzell, Brodnax, VA; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 10 older brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 6, at 1 p.m. at Darien Community Baptist Church with the Rev. John Mancusso officiating. Burial will be in Darien Cemetery.
