He was born Nov. 23, 1907, in Hixton, Wis., to Harvey and Jennie (Whiting) Bates, the second youngest of 11 children. He and the family moved to Harvard when he was a year old. On Aug. 24, 1939, he married Eloise E. Bogardus on her parents' farm near Belvidere.
In the 1930's, Mr. Bates operated a milk-hauling business and worked at D. Hereley and Sons in Harvard from 1941-51. He then worked at Dean Foods until his retirement in 1970.
He was a 73-year member of the First Presbyterian Church in Harvard, was active in the Harvard Moose Lodge and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Mr. Bates is survived by two sons, Gordon (Nancy) Bates of Rockford and Wesley Bates of Memphis, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Leda Hallsey of Florida and Irene Clark of Spokane, Wash.; a brother, Glen Bates of Darien, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife on May 10, 1995; and seven brothers and sisters.
The visitation will be from 2 p.m. until the funeral at 4 p.m Tuesday, July 28, at the Saunders and McFarlin Funeral Home in Harvard. The Rev. Jeff Borgerson will officiate.
Interment will be private.
