John and Jane Aggson
My Father and Mother, John H. Aggson and Jane was of the Old Pioneers of Old Quakerville and I am proud to give what I can remember of Dad.
"First of all he was a good Christian." I never heard him curse or knew him to take a drink of intoxicating liquors. He was a kind neighbor, he and his brother Ben Aggson owned farms adjoining. The Railroad went through both farms. Dad met Mother at one of their literary programs that the early settlers liked to hold. She was keeping house for her brothers, Billy and Jim Major, who had farms in the same community. Their first year they lived in a sod house but later when they learned that I was coming they built a 4 room frame house, where I was born 31 October 1891 and 4 of my brothers also were born there. John - Dolph - Harry & Bob. Harry died during a measles epidemic when he contracted pneumonia after measles. I was very small but I remember the funeral service in the Old Quaker church. Dad was glad to have the Old Quaker Church so close to our farm so we children could attend Sunday school.
I can remember the little cemetery just north of the Quaker church where Grandpa and Grandma Major were buried and also our little Harry. Later they were all moved to the Elwood cemetery. Dad was a stockman, I can still see him on horse back with a long black fur coat and cap and ear muffs rounding up his stock to feed. He raised mostly corn and feed for his stock, which he would ship to Omaha & Kansas City.
I can remember Uncle Ben's and our family, Dolph was the baby, he is the 3rd one, decided to take in the Aksarben held at Omaha. John and I got lost about 9 a.m. and they didn't find us till evening. Dad and Mother were most out of their minds.
Grandmother Aggison found us inspecting the first horseless carriage we had ever seen. Perhaps some will remember the white team that Dad loved to Drive. Fred & Jack, we would go to church and when it was out Old jack usually had his harness most shook off. We kept them until they died of old age. We attended the Hibbs school 3 miles east. Dad used to take us when he had time, because he was up at dawn and worked late, we often had to walk, and you, Charley used tease us something awful. I hoped some day to get so big that I could really take to your heels. But we moved to eastern Nebraska near Wilber & Lincoln before I was grown.
We moved back to Elwood after 2 years and were there one summer, then bought a farm near Stamford, Nebraska, where John and Dorothy were born. Dad loved his big famly and lived to see us all grow up and some of us married. He died at Canyon City, Colorado where he had taken Mother for her health. He died 5 years before Mother and was buried in the Woodman cemetery there. I remember he used to ride horseback to Elwood to Woodman meetings. He died 10 October, 32 years ago. I remember how thrilled I was when I read an account of the Wyster supper (Which was quite the thing in those times.) which Uncle Ben and Aunt Sadie gave them on the eve of their marriage. It was in the OFN magazine about a year ago, telling of the OF's reunion of 1954. I could write a lot about the old home at Quakerville but for lack of time I will have to close with this. It is so mixed up but I hope you can straighten it out.
I forgot to add that our old farm is the one that Bruce and Mable Phillips now live on and own. Except they build a house west of our little house up in what was an orchard and used to have a hedge around it.

Mrs. Jane Aggson died at St. Mary's Hospital in Tucson of bronchial asthma on 9 March 1931. She was female, white, widowed, age 69 years, 10 months and 6 days. She was born 3 May 1861 in Iowa to Dave Major and unknown, both born in Ireland. She was buried in San Diego, California on 10 March 1931 by Walker Grimshaw undertaking company in Tucson. Informant was Dorothy Aggson of La Mesa, California.
