Rev. Ashbel Green, son of Jacob Green and Elizabeth (Pierson) Green, was born in Hanover, New Jersey. His preparatory education was acquired under the instruction of his father. At the age of 16, he began his service in the Revolutionary War as a private in the Morris County, NJ, militia. He entered Princeton College, or Nassau Hall as it was called then, in the junior class and graduated in 1783 as valedictorian. From 1785-1787, he was professor of mathematics and natural philosophy at Princeton College before entering the ministry. He received the honorary degree of D.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1791, and that of L.L.D. from the University of North Carolina in 1812. He was pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia for 25 years from 1787 to 1812. He was the 8th President of the College of New Jersey (later known as Princeton University) from 1812 to 1822. He was a co-founder of Princeton Theological Seminary and president of its board of directors 1812-1848. He wrote for and was editor of the Christian Advocate, was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in 1824, a member of all the Boards or Corporations of the Church, since the time of their formation, and of some others. He lived to be 85 outliving his 3 wives: Elizabeth Stockton, Christiana Anderson, and Mary McCulloh. His autobiography, "The Life of Ashbel Green," begun when he was 75, consists of letters written from 1840-1842 to his youngest son, Ashbel.
