Hannah Stone was born February 16, 1802 in LeRoy, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, the youngest of at least 7 children born to Benjamin, Jr. and Elizabeth Wilcox Stone. Hannah's parents moved south from Massachusetts, arriving in West Franklin, Bradford County about 1799, before moving on to LeRoy where Benjamin became a major landowner (Heverly, Pioneer and Patriot Families, p. 327). According to the 1810 census, the family lived in Canton Township, then part of Luzerne County, along with 5 slaves.

On March 24, 1819, at 17, Hannah married Gurdon Griswold (1789-1862) of Franklin, New London, Connecticut. As of the 1820 census, they lived in Canton Township and had a daughter. By 1830, still in Canton Township, their family had expanded to 2 boys and 2 girls. The Griswold children included the following:

George Griswold (?-1853)
Stephen Griswold
Elizabeth Griswold Beach (1821-1886)
Horace Griswold (1822-1853)
Susan Griswold (1825-?)
Daniel Griswold (1833-?)

From 1840-1870, the Griswold census reports reflect LeRoy, Bradford County.

After husband Gurdon's death in 1862, Hannah lived alone until after the 1870 census. By the 1880 report, she was residing with daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law Erastus Beach in Fox Township, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania. Hannah died at age 96 on January 18, 1899, and was buried alongside husband Gurdon.
