Elizabeth Griswold was born in Canton, Bradford County, Pennsylvania in late 1821, the daughter of Gurdon Griswold (1789-1862) and Hannah Stone Griswold (1802-1899).

On September 10, 1846 she married Erastus Samuel Beach (1823-1882), two years her junior, Justice Allen McKean officiating. The couple started their married life in Troy, Bradford County, and sometime in the 1850s moved to LeRoy, Bradford County where they remained until the 1870s.

Erastus & Eliza had 6 children:

Adelbert Leslie Beach (1847-1927)

Susan Adellen Beach Carl (1849-1915)

Jesse M (probably Mansfield) Beach (1852-1917)

Helen Elizabeth Beach Kilmer (1854-1939)

Gurdon Griswold Beach (1857-1936)

Luella (c. 1858-1860)

By 1880, Erastus and Elizabeth had moved to Fox Township, Sullivan County where they lived next door to son Adelbert, and Erastus continued to farm. Erastus probably died in late 1882; Elizabeth filed for a widow's pension on December 13, 1882, app #300204. Erastus was buried in the East Canton Cemetery.

According to cemetery records, the 6-person lot in which Erastus is buried was purchased for $15. When Elizabeth died in 1886, she was in all likelihood buried next to her husband, but his is the only burial officially recorded for that lot. His grave is marked by a government headstone and Civil War star. Eliza may have once had a slate stone marker; several in that cemetery have fallen and, over time, been swallowed up by the earth. Her parents and three grandparents are also interred in the East Canton Cemetery.
