BACHARACH BENJAMIN BACHARACH, MD, FACS, Emeritus Professor of Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital died Thursday, March 20, 2003 in Brigantine, NJ following a long illness. Doctor Benjamin Bacharach was born in Atlantic City and grew up in and was a lifetime resident of Brigantine, NJ. He attended Brigantine schools and in 1938 graduated in a class of 3 students. He was subsequently graduated from Atlantic City High School, Muhlenberg College and in 1956 from Jefferson Medical College. Following his internship at Atlantic City Hospital he served his country as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy. He then completed his surgical residency at Jefferson Hospital and his Thoracic Fellowship at Pennsylvania Hospital. He was appointed Professor of Surgery and for the next twenty two years practiced cardiac and thoracic surgery at Jefferson in partnership with Dr. John Y. Templeton, III, and Dr. Stanton M. Smullens. He was a member of many national and internation-al surgical societies. During this time he served as Vice-Chair of the Department of Surgery at Jefferson. Doctor Bacharach retired from the clinical practice of surgery in 1983. He was then appointed the Dean of Admissions to the Jefferson Medical College. For the next seventeen years, he shaped the future of medicine by determining the next generation of doctors. In 1990 Doctor Bacharach became the first Dean for Alumni Relations. His portrait was presented by the Jefferson Medical College Class of 1993 and presently hangs in a place of honor at the College. In 2001 Dr. Bacharach was honored as the Outstanding Alumnus of the year by the College receiving the Cornerstone Award. Dr. Bacharach was Vice-President of the Board of Governors of the Bacharach Rehabilitation Hospital and a member of the Brigantine Historical Society. Doctor Bacharach is survived by his wife Nancy (nee Carlson) of 48 years, his sister Betty Bacharach Holwey, eight nieces and nephews and seventeen great nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Benjamin's Funeral Service, Saturday, March 29th, 11 A.M. at the Community Presbyterian Church, 1501 Brigantine Ave., Brigantine. Interment will follow at Laurel Memorial Park, Pomona. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation, PO Box 723, 61 West Jimmie Leads Road, Pomona, NJ 08240.
