David was a long time member of the Willoughby, Ohio Police Department, and retired with the rank of Lieutenant. In 1995, while serving as officer in charge of the Detective Bureau, Austen led the investigation into the brutal murder of a 27 year old female. The suspect had forcibly entered her home while her parents were asleep. Within hours, the suspect, was identified, arrested, and pled guilty. The Lake County Blue Coats awarded Austen the prestigious Jorge Medina DIstinguished Service Award for his part in this investigation.
