DAVID J. AUSTEN, age 51, of Concord Township, formerly of Mentor and Willoughby. Retired Assistant Police Chief, Willoughby. Beloved son of Maxine and the late Charles H. Jr. Dearest father of Amanda, Jennifer and Kenneth. Dear brother of Dwight (Janet) Austen and the late Kenneth Austen. Funeral service, 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 25, 2008, BRUNNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICE, 8466 MENTOR AVE., MENTOR, where family will receive friends FROM 6-8 P.M. WEDNESDAY AND 2-4 AND 6-8 P.M. THURSDAY. Interment Concord Township Cemetery. Contributions suggested to Teen Challenge of Greater Cleveland, P.O. Box 115, Perry OH 44081

David was a long time member of the Willoughby, Ohio Police Department, and retired with the rank of Lieutenant. In 1995, while serving as officer in charge of the Detective Bureau, Austen led the investigation into the brutal murder of a 27 year old female. The suspect had forcibly entered her home while her parents were asleep. Within hours, the suspect, was identified, arrested, and pled guilty. The Lake County Blue Coats awarded Austen the prestigious Jorge Medina DIstinguished Service Award for his part in this investigation.
