daughter of Henry and Elsie (Beyers) Ackermann

Lorna M. Custard, 98, of Waterloo, died Friday morning at Rosewood Estates of natural causes.

She was born June 29, 1914 in Grundy County, the daughter of Henry and Elsie Beyers Ackermann. She married Pearl Custard on December 31, 1934 in Waterloo. He preceded her in death on February 28, 1982.

Lorna owned and operated a restaurant out of her own home for a number of years. Her life consisted not only of working the restaurant and being a good cook, but also running a salad business out of her basement delivering to the Piggly Wiggly and smaller grocery stores in Waterloo. Among her many culinary creations, her potato salad stood out as one of the finest. She also felt devoted to her nieces and nephews and all the ‘greats'. Lorna learned how to play the piano at 87 and bought her first computer in 1998, only to loose her sight several years later. In her later years she played card games of "31" and Canadian Rummy with all of her friends.

She is survived by nieces, nephews and 'greats'.

Lorna was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Erwin and Harry Ackermann; and her twin sister, Lois Haynes.

Services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, March 4, at the Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball with burial in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home for an hour before services.
