Since her mother was young and unprepared to care for her, she was raised by her maternal grandmother and step-grandfather. They were at Pearl Harbor when it came under attack by Japan. Jean remembered seeing shrapnel falling at the Navy housing. Afterwards they returned to Long Beach and lived with her mother during her teen years. She never really knew her father and met him once as a young adult. She married Albert Roger Hartzell (1932-2003) in Arizona in 1952 and had a daughter and son who were born and then raised in Long Beach by their maternal grandmother; Jean and Roger divorced then she married 2nd to Bob Layman and had a son who she gave up for unofficial adoption to friends she met while living in Alabama; She moved with Bob to Chicago in the 1960's and after he died there, she married 3rd to Bill Campbell briefly before divorcing, no issue . In the early 1980's she moved from Chicago to Long Beach to be with her mother, grown children and grandchildren.
