Visitation for Charles M. Astle, 90, of Momence, will be from 10 A.M. Wednesday until the 11 A.M. services at the Cotter funeral home in Momence. The Rev. Dan Taylor will officiate. Burial, with military rights by the Momence honor guard, will be in the Momence Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family wishes. He died Saturday, June 24, 2009 at the Momence Meadows nursing center. Mr. Astle owned and operated Astle hardware store in Momence for 37 years. He was born December 31, 1918, in Momence, the son of Milan and Florence West Astle. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received two overseas service bars, the Asiatic Pacific theater ribbon, the Philippine liberation ribbon with two bronze stars and the Purple Heart for wounds he received in Okinawa. He also fought in the battle of Leyte. He had attended the Episcopal Church of the good Shepherd in Momence. He was a member of the Momence American Legion Post 44 for more than 50 years, the VFW for more than 50 years, the Masonic Lodge and the Momence chamber of commerce. He had been a board member for Momence federal Savings and Loan and a Momence Cemetery board member. He enjoyed bowling, horse racing and playing cards.

Surviving are his wife, the former Phyllis Cook, whom he married October 18, 1953, in Momence; two sons and one daughter in-law, William M Astle of Momence, Gary and Diane Astle of Houston, Texas; one daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Spencer Leiter of Bloomington, Indiana; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Betty Stam of Momence. One sister, Vivian Pruessler, is deceased.
