Thaney was the daughter of Elijah Clayton and Elizabeth 'Betty' Webb Roach. Her siblings were John, Josephine, Millie, Hannah, Mahalie, Robert, Henderson, Elijah Jr., James Nelson, Elizabeth and Austin. She was married to Harrison Hughes about 1841 and their children in 1850 were John, Mahala Jane, Martha J. and Elizabeth. The youngest, Thanie, born 1856 and named for her mother, married John Armstrong and lived in neighboring McMinn County.

The family lore always said Harrison left Thaney and the children and went west and raised a 2nd family. The 'going west' part of this is true, but Thaney died in 1861 according to her children when they filed for Cherokee enrollment. Harrison is married to a neighbor girl, Elvira Silcox and still living right in the Polk County, TN community with his ex father-in-law, Elijah Clayton and next door to his brother Charles, and Elvira's mother, Fereby. He and Elmira have a 9 year old son, Price, Birt is 6, Lafayette 3, and a month old baby Myron.

The leaving-his-wife story may possibly be about Harrison's brother, Charles, who did indeed desert his wife, Dolly Burchfiel, and 7 children in Monroe Couty, TN, and went to Montana about 1878 or so. Dolly thought he had died and filed for his Civil War pension and found out he was still living. He died 7 August 1907 and is buried in Lewistown, Montana.

In 1880 Harrison and Elmira are in Flint, Arkansas with the same children but with an Eliza J. and Sis A. And they are in Venita, Oklahoma in 1890.

There has been a record for many years of a 'Mrs. Hughes' being buried in Greasy Creek Cemetery, and there is an unmarked grave next to Elijah and Betsy Clayton where she is more than likely buried, so we have placed a marker in that spot in her memory.
