Death of Rev. E. L. Briggs

Many of our readers here and elsewhere will deeply regret to learn of the death of Rev. E. L. Briggs, of Wilton Iowa on Thursday, February 7, 1889. Rev. Briggs had been an active earnest and efficient Christian minister from early manhood to ripe old age. For perhaps more than 30 years he preached for the ME Church being located several years at Grinnell. After much careful research he became convinced he could no longer believe and preach all the doctrines promulgated by that religious sect. Having no desire to create dissension he preached a farewell sermon setting forth his religious convictions, and abiding to his loved congregation an earnest Godspeed, he went out into the world preaches honest convictions.

He preached occasionally here for the Universalist several years and was greatly loved by all his congregation. His sermons were always filled of love for all humanity; love to his Creator and the cause of religion, the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of all mankind were favorable themes to him, and no unblessed person could listen to his earnest, eloquent, loving words without being impressed with the genuineness of his honesty of purpose in striving to lead his fellows to higher aspirations and stronger hopes. Sin in every form was by him justly rebuked, and the sinner warned that he could not escape the results of his transgression, or the just punishments of violated laws. There was no room in his loving heart for envy or hatred for anyone. He greatly enjoyed his religious sentiments and earnestly desire to assist others to the same enjoyment. His remains were interred in Forest cemetery, at Oskaloosa, on Monday.

Thus has ended an eventful life. Thus has closed the life and labors of one who lived and labored long and earnestly to lead his fellow men to higher, purer life, increased happiness, more usefulness and greater reward in the great unknown future. His great heart went out in loving sympathy to all. His life was worthy of imitation by all Christians. His earthly career has ended; his purified spirit has entered upon that other higher and better life for which his soul so earnestly longed while dwelling in its earthly tabernacle of clay. Though dead he yet lives in the hearts of many who knew him best and loved him most.
