ANDERSON Dr. Pauline Durant Lide, 84, formerly of Marion, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at Anderson Place after an illness.

She was born May 30, 1918, a daughter of the late Thaddeus R. and Bessie Allen Kide. She was born and reared in Marion. She graduated from Marion High School at the age of 16 and then from Limestone College in Gaffney on her 20th birthday. She majored in English and history. She taught in a boarding school for mountain children in Tamassee, where she also served as a housemother for 12 adolescent girls.

She completed a master's degree in social work at the University of South Carolina in 1941 and, from then until her retirement, she remained in that profession. She received a second master's degree in social work in 1946 from the University of Chicago, and, in 1951, she was Fulbright Scholar at the University of London.

In 1952, she was in the advanced doctoral level program at the University of Chicago. In 1961, she was on a sabbatical leave to advance her studies at Columbia University in New York. In 1965, she completed her doctorate in social work at Smith College in Northampton, Mass.

She was a public welfare case worker in Laurens County in 1942 and then went to serve as a social worker in a military hospital during World War II. She was a family counselor in a family service agency in New Jersey for four years until 1948, when she joined the faculty of the University of Tennessee.

From 1948 until her retirement, she was continuously on the faculty or in an administrative role in graduate schools for social work. From 1948 to 1951, she was on the faculty of the University of Tennessee; from 1953 to 1954, she was on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin; from 1954 to 1963, she was on the faculty of Tulane University; and from 1965 until her retirement she was on the faculty of the University of Georgia, where she became an assistant dean in 1974.

She was predeceased by a sister, Dr. Mary Frances Lide; and a brother and sister-in-law, David Allen and Margaret Lide.

Survivors include a brother, T. Roland Lide and his wife, Mildred C., of Columbia; two nieces, Martha L. Figueroa and her husband, Charlie, of Australia and Dianne L. Gregory and her husband, Phil, of Columbia; a nephew, Mel E. Lide and his wife, Mary, of New Jersey; three great-nieces, Megan Figueroa, Molly Figueroa and Ellen Lide; and two great-nephews, Phillip Lide Gregory and Evan Lide.

A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. today at Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion. The Rev. Daniel Inabinet will officiate.
