Obit for Farmer Carter
Farmer Carter of Carthage passed away Wednesday, April 10, 1985, at Smith County Memorial Hospital. He was 75. Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 12, at 2:00 p.m at the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home with Rev. Fred Hembree, Sr. and Rev. Maurice Moore officiating. Interment was in the Ridgewood Cemetery. A native of the Granville community in Jackson County, he was the son of the late Lee Roy and Fannie Roberts Carter. He was in the hardware and furniture business in Carthage for some 39 years before his retirement in 1975. He was a member of the Carthage United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Carthage Lion's Club and was a licensed pilot serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was member of the Carthage V.F.W. and the Carthage Benevolent Lodge No. 14 where he was Past Master. He was former Worthy Patron of the order of Eastern Star, a member of the York Rite, and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was also a member of the Smith County Shrine Club and the Al Menah Temple in Nashville. The Carthage Benelovent Lodge No. 14 conducted a Masonic Chapel Service Thursday, April 18, at 8:00 p.m. Mr. Carter was an avid C.B'er and had the first license and radio in Smith County. His C.B. number 6Q-0444 was among the first 500 C.B. licenses issued in the United States. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Brown Carter; his son, Stites Ray Carter, both of Carthage; two sisters, Vyda Anderson and Marie Pharris, Granville ; four brothers, Malcolm, Alton, and J.N. Carter, all of Granville and Mack Carter, Carthage; two grandsons, Chris and Tracy Carter, Carthage. Sanderson Funeral Home of Carthage was in charge of arrangements.
