Obit for Alton G. Carter
Gainesboro -- Funeral services for Alton G. Carter, 84, of Granville, will be held Thursday, September 10, at 10 a.m. fron the chapel of Anderson-Upper Cumberland Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Granville Cemetery. Family will receive friens today, wednesday, Sept. 9, from 5-8 p.m. and Thursday, Sept 10, from 9 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home. Mr. Carter died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2009, at his residence. He was born May 13, 1925, in Jackson County to the late Lee Roy and Fannie Roberts Carte. Mr. Carter served in the Navy during World War II in the South pacific and was Pharmacist's Mate Second Class. He was a member of Granville United Methodist Church, former president and vice president of the Granville Cemetery Association and an avid fisherman and woodworker. Mr. Carter was also a retired warehouse manager at Big Dollar Warehouse in Sparta. His family includes his wife, Mildred Haile Carter of Granville (married July 25, 1948); two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Robert Dudney of Cookeville and Jeannie and Allen Grimes of Kernersville, NC; two grandchhildren, Joshua Sprague and Kathryn Teague; and one great grandchild, Nathan Teague. In addition to his parents, Mr. Carter was preceded in dath by four brothers, Farmer, Malcolm, Mack and J. N. Carter, and three sisters, Marie Carter Pharris, Emma Carter and Vyda Carter Anderson. Memorial donations may be made to the Granville Cemetery by contacting the funeral home. Pastor Ernest Blair will officiate the services.
