Alois was born in Waldmünchen, Kreis Cham, Oberpfalz, Bayern, Germany, to Daniel L. Brickl [Brückl / Brueckl] and Maria Roetzer [Rötzer]. Maria died March 14, 1864, in Waldmünchen, Bavaria, Germany. Daniel married a second time, to Katharina Rötzer, the niece of his first wife. At the age of 17, Alois immigrated to America with his father, step-mother and his siblings on April 6, 1872, arriving presumably at Castle Garden in New York, New York. Alois married Justina Bindl on October 5, 1876, at St. Luke Catholic Church in Plain, Sauk County, Wisconsin. They had 7 children: Anna Theresia Brickl, Mary Brickl Weiss, Victoria Brickl Liegel, Joseph W. Brickl (wife Rosanna Meixelsperger), Anton Joseph Brickl (wife Anna Lins), Rosina M. Brickl Laubmeier), and Catherine Ann Brickl. On March 30, 1903 Cramer Brothers in Plain, Wisconsin, in partnership with Alois Brickl, opened their store with a line of groceries and wares. However, this partnership was not to be long lived. In the spring of the following year, the partnership was dissolved with Cramer Brothers buying out Alois Brickl's interest. [Source: A History of Plain by Hildegarde Thering, page 79]. In 1938, Alois and Justina celebrated 62 years of marriage. The Weekly Home News reported: "Sixty-Second Anniversary in Wedlock Celebrated - Mr. and Mrs. Alois Brickl, Sr., quietly celebrated their sixty-second wedding anniversary on October 5th, 1938, and the following Sunday, October 9th their five children, thirty-seven grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren pleasantly surprised them at the farm home of their son, Anton J. Brickl. At high noon a dinner was served to the seventy-one guests-Rev. P.A. Beschta, Miss Lucy Beschta and the family of sixty-nine. Little grand-daughter, Mary Ann Brickl, greeted her grandparents. Shooting pictures, music, singing, also a card game with prizes to the highest and lowest score were awarded. The afternoon was pleasantly spent by the aged couple to see their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren enjoying the day. A lunch was served on the lawn, after which they all went home, wishing Mr. and Mrs. Brickl many more happy anniversaries." Alois was a farmer and was retired for 30 years before his death on April 18, 1948, at Plain, Sauk County, Wisconsin.
