Evelyn Marie Cockroft Babcock, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012, at Bonell Good Samaritan Community, at the age of 92.

She was born in rural Phillips County, Kan., on July 30, 1920. She was the oldest of six children born to her parents, Ivan Albert and Gertrude Annis (Lake) Cockroft. The family lived in Phillips County on various farms until 1936 when they moved to Delta County, Colo.

Evelyn attended rural school for the first eight grades and attended high school in Alma, Neb., graduating with teacher training. She taught one year in a rural school in Nebraska before moving to Delta in 1938. She attended Western State College in Gunnison, Colo., continuing her teacher preparation. She then taught at a rural school near Paonia, Colo., for two years.

Evelyn married Wayne Babcock on June 10, 1943, in Delta. They made their home in Phillips County while Wayne farmed part-time and also attended the Wesleyan College in Miltonvale, Kan., preparing for pastoral ministry. He ministered in several churches while he finished school and was ordained in 1946. They continued to pastor in country churches. During this time they also had five children. The family moved to Morgan County, Colo. in 1952. Evelyn taught at Goodrich, Colo., for two years and they lived in the teacherage. In 1954, the family moved to Greeley so Evelyn could complete more college education. She also began teaching at Ault, which later became Highland, Weld County Re-9. She taught in that district 26 years until her retirement in 1980. She was first a classroom teacher, then worked with various special programs and was the K-12 reading coordinator for the district. Evelyn completed her BA in 1956, MA in 1962, and Specialist in Reading in 1969, all at the University of Northern Colorado. She was a member of NEA, CEA and the Retired Teacher section of AARP. After retirement, Evelyn became active in the Weld County Genealogical Society and was a volunteer tutor for reading programs.

She and her husband traveled, worked on family history and made six trips to Europe, also visiting Israel, Jordan, and Egypt. Wayne preceded Evelyn in death in 2003. She moved to Bonell Good Samaritan Community in July 2002, first in independent living and then to full care in 2011.

Evelyn became a Christian as a child and was a member of the Greeley Wesleyan Church since 1952. She was active in many areas of church work, teaching all ages in Sunday School, and working on the Greeley Wesleyan Missions Committee.

She is survived by five children, Richard (Teri) Babcock of Estes Park, Colo., Carol Babcock of Greeley, Sharol (Ron) Little of Estes Park, David (Brenda) Babcock of Vienna, Austria, and Janet Sleichter of Greeley. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one great- great-grandchild; and one brother, Dee of Delta. She was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers; and one grandchild.

Viewing will be from 6-8 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012, at Adamson Chapel. Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 22, 2012, at Greeley Wesleyan Church, 3600 22nd St., Greeley. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
