Emmitt Barnard, 72, Orchard, Ky., passed away Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012.
Emmitt was raised in Kurtz. He worked at Reliance in Columbus for eight years, then moved to Indianapolis, where he owned Barnard's Roofing and the Honky Tonk Tavern while working as a journeyman machinist at Raytheon Navy Avionics, where he retired in 2004. He enjoyed cars, motorcycles, playing horseshoes, darts, pool and spending time with family and friends.
Born March 18, 1940, he was the son of Sam Barnard and Vivian Barnard, both of whom preceded him in death. He married LaDonna Bowers in 1962. He then married Phyllis Warman in 2008. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Julia Bryant and Lisa Growe, both of Jackson County; stepchildren, Tonya Wininger and Frank Warman; eight grandchildren, Chris Barnard, Casey Roberts, Chelsea Bruner, Courtney Burke, Lishelle Barnard, Shain Barnard, Amanda Smith and Bobby Smith; six step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Marcus Barnard and Hershal Barnard; and two sisters, Sara Wooldridge and Ruth Brittian.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Okley Barnard; and two sisters, Nila Mize and Annabell Taylor.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Garfield Park United Church of Christ, Indianapolis. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of service at the church.
There also will be calling and a dinner from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the American Legion post in Brownstown, 709 W. Bridge St.
