Hattie was born in Benton Co, IA on 10 Oct 1862 the daughter of Loved and Mary Brewster (Nutt) Garey.
She died 31 Dec 1881 in Linn Co, IA of Diptheria.
from the obit: Gary--of diphtheria, Dec 31st Hattie E. Gary (Newcomb) aged 19 years, 2 months and 21 days.
Also, January 1st of diphtheria, Nellie Eva, aged 13 years, 9 months and 26 days, daughter of Loved and Mary Gary.
The ravages of this tearful malady is simply appalling in this once happy and most prosperous family. Three children who have so suddenly fallen its victimes were in other respcets hearty and vigorous and gave promise of long and useful lives. Seldom in the annals of history is one called to pass through such heart rending scenes. The girls were both conscious to the very last and knew that death was near.
Hattie was calm and resigned and wished to go. She called for songs and the attending physician sang with her; their voices had not died away before she fell asleep. She was a member of the Congregational church and died in full and victorious faith.
Nellie called for songs to cheer her dying hours, and smiled sweetly between the paroxyams of death which at an early hour Sabbath morning gave her spirit release.
The funeral of both took place Monday at 10 o'clock a.m. at the house and were conducted by Rev. W. A. Waterman. Minnie is better at this writing and it is hoped that she may be spared to her broken hearted parents. The neighbors and friends were very kind and helpful during all thse sad events, and sympathy from the heart's deepest fountains flow from a large circle of friends.
Added note: Harriet Ellen Garey born in Benton Co., IA, the daughter of Loved Garey and Mary Brewster Nutt Garey, Married 30 March 1881 in Marion, IA to George H.F. Newcomb. George was born in 1853 in Boston, MA. Groom 28, Bride 19.
(Hattiet died Dec 1881 so the marriage didn't last long)
