Cleao Dotson was the second child of nine born to Oscar Brown Dotson (1881-1948) and Edith Virginia (Baxter) Dotson (1882-1967). A native of Iowa, he and his wife Bess relocated in California. They were the parents of a daughter, Dixie, and a son, Steve.
