Husband of Mabel Adams Duncan and dad of Robert and Colin Duncan.

Willard served as a Private, Company K, 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

He resided in Midlothian, Allegany County, Maryland prior to the war. He was married, however his wife's name is currently unknown.

He was "Killed In Action" on Iwo Jima during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

FROSTBURG, April 29

Pvt. Willard Rankin Duncan, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Duncan, Midlothian, was killed in action on Iwo Jima, February 21, according to a telegram from the War department received Friday by his widow, the former Miss Mabel Adams, of Carlos.

Inducted June 3, 1944, Pvt. Duncan, a former coal miner, trained at Parris Island and Camp Lejuene, S.C., and Camp Pendleton, Calif. He went overseas November 6, 1944 and was attached to the 23rd Regiment of the Fourth Marine division.

Besides his parents and widow, he is survived by two children, Robert and Colin, at home; two Seaman 1-c George Duncan Jr., with the Seabees on Mariannas, and James Leslie Duncan, at home; and two sisters, Sara Jane and Lois Duncan, both at home.

Pvt. Duncan attended Beall High School, this city, and was affiliated with the Pentecostal Church, Midlothian. The last letter received from him by his family was dated February 10.
