Charles C. Byrd, 86, passed away September 26, at Mesilla Valley Hospice La Posada. Charlie was born December 21, 1924, in Dayton Tennessee, to Howard G. Byrd and Lillian Daugherty Byrd. Charlie grew up in Big Stone Gap, Virginia.
He served in the Navy in World War II. Following his discharge in 1946, he worked for a year and a half in the West Virginia coal mines before enrolling in Marshall University. While at Marshall, he was an active member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, where he made lifelong friendships. After he graduated, he worked briefly for Douglas Aircraft in California, until he was employed by Pi Kappa Alpha as a traveling secretary.
During his travels in that capacity, he met Ann Vickers at the University of Arizona. They were married on June 2, 1956. He then came to the Mesilla Valley and began farming with his father-in-law. He continued farming until he retired.
Throughout the years, he has served on several financial boards in Las Cruces, and has been an enthusiastic and outspoken member of the Republican Party.
Charlie is survived by Ann, his wife of 55 years; two sons, David and his wife Sherri, and John and his wife Margaret, all of Mesilla Park; two daughters, Tamara Spooner and her husband Kevin, of Placitas, and Lillian, of Carlsbad. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Jason Byrd and his wife Angelica, of Springfield, Virginia; Nicholas Byrd, USNavy, currently in Newport, Rhode Island; Lindsey Byrd, of Newport Beach, California; Madison Byrd and Jacob Byrd, both of Mesilla Park; and Abigail and Samuel Spooner, of Placitas. Other survivors include a brother, John H. Byrd, of Rio Rancho, and two sisters, Lillian Fielder, of Chloride, Arizona, and Nancy Robinson, of Roanoke, Virginia. Nieces and nephews include Kenneth Fielder, of Chloride, Arizona, Jane Meggers, of Roanoke, Virginia, Charles Robinson, of Gastonia, North Carolina, and Martha Bidal, of Rio Rancho.
He was predeceased by his parents and a nephew, Richard Byrd. He is also survived by a host of loving friends.
Services are scheduled for Saturday morning, October 1st, at 10:00 o'clock, at St. Paul's Methodist Church. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery.
