Ann Vickers Byrd
Ann (Annie) Dee Vickers, an only child, was born April 10, 1935 in Orange, California to Fred and Florine Vickers. She passed away 7 Sept. 2021.

Her father would often tease her by saying that he and her mother could never have children and had Annie instead. But from the moment Annie was born she was loved and adored by her parents and grandparents, both maternal and paternal.

Annie's early life was spent in California, attending schools in Chatsworth, Palm Springs, and Beverly Hills. For a short while she lived and attended school in Fort Myers, FL. Many of the places in which she lived as a young girl were with her mother and her maternal grandparents while her father served in the US Army Air Corps.

Her father entered World War II at the age of 40. He once wrote his mother that, as hard as it was to make the decision to leave Annie and Florine, he believed that the more a man had, the more he had to fight for. That sense of patriotism and duty stuck with Annie for the rest of her life.

After the war, in 1945, the Vickers family moved to Mesilla Park where her father bought a farm close to his parents. Annie always said that when they moved to Mesilla Park she felt as though she'd actually come home. It was there that she met her neighborhood sidekick, Carol Chittick Rogers with whom she remained close for the rest of their lives.

It was while she was attending the University of Arizona that Annie met Charles Byrd, whom she described, upon first glance, as conceited and handsome. Although her many friends warned her about this charming man about town, she ignored them, took a chance, married Charlie in 1956 and had a beautiful marriage that flourished until his death in 2011. They had 4 children, 7 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and many warm and wonderful memories.

Although Annie was quite active in the community, volunteering Memorial Medical Center, serving on the hospital board of directors, participating in Panhellenic and other organizations, her biggest accomplishment was her family. She thrived on being a wife, mother and grandmother.

She was a voracious reader and enjoyed writing. She loved to torture her children by making them pose for the annual Christmas card photograph. She enjoyed travelling, telling family stories, genealogy, poetry and history. She really loved the ocean.

Annie is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles, her son, David and her daughter, Lillian. She is also preceded in death by her cherished cousin, Peter Pinson.

She is survived by her son, John (Margaret) of Mesilla Park; daughter, Tamara Spooner, of Albuquerque; daughter-in law, Sherri Byrd of
Mesilla Park and her son-in-law, Kevin Spooner. Annie is survived by seven grandchildren, Jason Byrd of McLean, VA; Nicolas Byrd (Alison) of Chula Vista, CA; Lindsey Johnston (Todd) of Newport Beach, CA; Madison Byrd of Newport Beach, CA; Jacob Byrd of Mesilla Park; Abigail Spooner of Northampton, MA;
Samuel Spooner of Albuquerque. She is survived by her great grandchildren, Carlina Byrd and Grayson Byrd.

Pallbearers were John Byrd, Jason Byrd, Jacob Byrd, Samuel Spooner, Todd Johnston, Robert Jameson, and Cary Perkins. Honorary pallbearers were Nicholas Byrd, Kevin Spooner and Ken Fielder.

A funeral was held at St. Paul's Methodist Church, with a burial at Masonic Cemetery.

Arrangements were with La Paz-Graham's Funeral Home .
