ELIZABETH BETTS SULLIVAN-82: Solomn high requiem mass was said at StBarnabas church in Barry Saturday for MrsElizabeth Sullivan, one of BigStone county's oldest pioneers & the widow of a Civil War veteran. Mrs Sullivan died at her home in ToquaTwp Thursday afternoon after a prolonged illness. A heart attack was the immediate cause of her death. The requiem mass was celebrated by the Rev Father JA Phelan-Barry assisted by the Rev Father Richard King-Clontarf & the Rev Father HenryJ Bryne-Franklin. The Rev Father PJ Shanahan-Beardsley was present in the sanctuary.

Elizabeth Betts Sullivan was born at Hutch-inson on 15 Jul 1859, dau of Catherine & Peter Betts. After her father's death in the CivilWar, she made her home with her grandparents in ScottCnty. At the age of 17 she was married to the late JohnL Sullivan, a Civil War veteran & member of CoK 105th Reg IL Vol Inf; he died 28 Nov 1932. They made their home at Cedar Lake until 1880, when they came to Browns Valley. They lived in the Valley a short time before taking up the homestead in BigStone Cnty on which the family has lived for the past half century.
To them were born 10 children, 8 of whom are still living; Peter, Mary, Anna, Ella, Vincent & Jerome-all of Barry, John-Winnipeg Manitoba & Kathryn (sp-William) Lefebvre-Minot ND. Besides these, her passsing is mourned by 9 grandchildren & 1 gr grandchild, by 3 sis: Mary Clifford-Minneapolis, Sarah Mullin-Graceville & Catherine Higgins-Barry & by 4 bros: AbramB-Clinton, Will, John & Leonard-Barry.
The oldest pioneer of Barry community, she celebrated her 82nd birthday Jul 15th. She was a charter member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, a member of StBarnabas Altar Soc & the degree of Honor. Not only was Mrs Sullivan a pioneer in point of time but also in farm activities, being one of the first to undertake gardening & poultry raising on a large scale. Her best loved hobby was the raising of flowers, of which she grew a great many every year. Although confined to her home the past several years, MrsSullivan had kept her interest in wolrd events & local affairs up to the day of her death. Her friends will always remember her as a most generous, kind & hospitable neighbor.
