Tommie moved with his family from Fayette County, Alabama to Itawamba County Mississippi when he was about five years old. The family then moved to McClain County, Oklahoma sometime after 1920. Following a brief time in the Merchant Marines serving mostly between the Pacific Ocean side of the United States and China, he joined his parents and younger siblings in Hockley County, Texas. He moved to Oklahoma City about 1934 where he drove a milk truck for a time. He married Virginia Amy Lineberry in December 1938. Tommie and Virginia had two children, Donna Marie Willis Brown and Michael James "Mickey" Willis. Tommie had worked as a commercial driver or in sales until his death in 1961. He is buried next to his parents and his wife, Virginia.
