Leroy was the youngest son of his parents, Zedic Hamilton and Mellie Jane Welch Willis. His parents moved from Alabama to Mississippi to Oklahoma and then to Smyer, Texas, before returning to Oklahoma in the mid-1930s. It was while he was living in Smyer that he met Vileta McCullough, the daughter of neighbors. In 1934, Leroy and Vileta followed the pattern of his older sister, Ruth, in driving over to Clovis, New Mexico to get married. Leroy was a farmer for a good portion of his life before he moved to Oklahoma City and became a painter. Leroy and Vileta had three sons; their oldest son, Wayne, preceded both his parents in death.
