Almon was the 1st of 10 children (1st son) born of Leman Bartholomew (1783-1863) and his wife Clarissa Coggswell (1789-1864).

Almon married 1st Jane Bishop (1804-1833) by whom he had one child (a son) Charles (1830-1830). For his 2nd wife he married Betsey Stannard (1810-1875) by whom he had seven children: Heman Almon (1834-1922), Jane B. (1836-1909), Clarissa (Clara) M. (1838-1923), Julia E. (b. 1844), George S. (1848-1879), Mary Elisabeth (b. 1850), and Almon Stannard (1868-1913).
