Harry was the 8th of ten children (4th son) born of Leman Bartholomew (1783-1863) and his wife Clarissa Coggswell (1789-1864). Harry's siblings were: Almon (Almond) (1806-1889), Alma (1808-1810), Caroline (1809-1905), Darwin (1811-1849), Harriett (1812-1816), Betsy (1814-1879), Shepherd (1816-1900), Warren (1820-1897), and Benjamin Franklin (1822-1892).

Harry married, December 15, 1842, Annis Benjamin (1820-1865) by whom he had five children (all daughters): Alma Mariah (b. 1846), Nancy M. (1848-1879), Clara E. (1852-1904), Laura Ann (1854-1951), and Flora A. Bartholomew (1857-1949).
