James was born in Michaelsville, Ind to the late Claude and Dottie (Babb) Carmichael and was a life resident of Marion.

James married Marge Darst on September 2, 1945. She preceded in death. He then married Bessie M. (Perkins) Harmon on September 9, 1995. She survives. He retired from Peerless Machine and Tool and was formerly employed at Crosley. He was a member of West Eighth Street Wesleyan Church, Marion. He was a WWII Army Veteran, 82nd Airborne. James dearly loved his family.

He is survived by his wife, Bessie Carmichael, Marion; son, Dennis (Christina) Carmichael, LaFontaine, grandchildren, Denise (Shane) Farr, LaFontaine, J.R. (Danielle Heubel) Carmichael, Fort Wayne, and Eric Carmichael, Marion; great-great-grandchildren, Morgan and Alex Farr; brothers, Raymond (Jackie) Carmichael, Sweetser, and Kenneth (Judy) Carmichael, Marion; sisters, Ruth Cox, and Anna Mae (Robert) Lewis, both of Marion, Marguerite (John) Wimmer, Jonesboro, and Margaret Bozell, Jacksonville, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Jennie and Marjorie Carmichael, Marion; and brother-in-law, Gene Carl, Marion.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marge; daughter, Jan Carmichael; sister, Kathryn Carl and brothers, David and Harold Carmichael; and parents, Claude and Dottie Carmichael.
