EDWARD BENSON

VARNA: George Edward Benson, 92, of 400 Walnut St., died at 9:40 p.m. Friday, January 29, 1993, at Heartland Health Care Center in Henry, where he had been a patient for one week.

Born November 30, 1900, in Henry to Peter and Sarah Marie Larson Benson, he married Ruth V. Austin on October 23, 1926, in Varna. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Richard A. of Batavia; one daughter, Mrs. John (Shirley) Schou of Rockford; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. One half sister preceded him in death.

He owned and operated Varna Auto Service and sold Buick and Chevrolet automobiles for 50 years before retiring in 1981. He was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Varna and was a former member of the church council.

He was a member and past president of the former Varna Rotary Club.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at his church. The Reverands Lane Knouse and Hubert N. G. Ahnquist will officiate. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Newton Funeral Home in Varna. Burial will be in Furst Lutheran Cemetery #2 in rural Varna.
