PETER BENSON VARNA'S ELDEST
RESIDENT, DIES
Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock last Saturday afternoon, September 21, in the St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Varna, for Peter Benson, that community's eldest resident, nearly 99 years of age.
He had passed away about 1 o'clock the preceding Wednesday afternoon, September 18, 1963, at the Atterberry Nursing Home in Washburn, having been a patient there for the past nine months, though in gradually failing health for several years.
The Rev. Glenn Anderson, pastor of the First Lutheran Church of Varna, officiated at the services, which concluded with interment rites in the First Lutheran Cemetery #1, north of the village.
Members of the First Lutheran parish have been kindly offered the facilities of the St. Paul's Church building for such functions, while their own church building is under construction, this being the second such event since the older building was dismantled last spring.
Miss Florence Gustafson, the First Lutheran Church organist, played the organ prelude and the postlude, and accompanied David Eldon Anderson of Batavia, a former Varna resident, in two vocal selections, "Children of the Heavenly Father" and "The Old Rugged Cross".
Serving as pallbearers were Floyd Austin, Earl Perkins, Herbert Extrom, Charles Holmstrom, Oscar Flesburg, and Robert Umphress.
Prior to the services, friends in large numbers called at the Boose funeral home in Henry, Friday evening, and at the St. Paul's church Saturday from 12:30 until the hour of the service.
Had he lived until October 15 of this year, Mr. Benson would have reached his 99th birthday. He was born on that date in 1864, in the village of Stehog, in the province of Skane, Sweden.
He was the only one of several children in the family to come to the States, and the last survivor; his last living sister, Mrs. Ulrika Nelson, died in Sweden about two years ago.
He came to this country in 1888, landing in Quebec in May of that year.
He was married on January 21, 1899, to the former Mrs. Sarah Maria Larson Lindberg, of Varna. Their only child, a son, G. Edward Benson, of Varna, was born while they lived west of Henry. About 44 years ago, they
retired from farming, and moved to Varna, where the wife died in 1944.
Surviving are one step-daughter, Mrs. Mauritz Stromgren and one son, Edward, both of Varna, two grandchildren, one step-granddaughter and two great- grandchildren.
