FUNERAL SERVICES FOR MRS. BENSON
Mrs. Peter Benson, aged 82, passed away at her home, early Thursday morning, April 13, 1944, following a lingering illness.
Sara Maria Larson was born in Varmland, Sweden, August 19, 1851. She came to America in 1887 and shortly after her arrival became a member of the First Lutheran Church at Varna, of which she remained a faithful member until her death.
She was married to John Lindberg some over 50 years ago, who preceded her in death in November 1898. Three children were born to this union, one daughter, Mrs. Elvina Stromgren of Varna, and two sons, who died in infancy.
January 21, 1899, she was married to Peter Benson. One son, Edward Benson, was born to this union. Surviving are her husband, son, Edward, and daughter, Mrs. Elvina Stromgren, three grandchildren, Viola Stromgren, Dick and Shirley Benson, several nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Mrs. Benson was very devoted to her family and home and a great lover of flowers. Although frail in health for many years, she greatly enjoyed caring for her flowers. During her recent illness as well as at other times, she was tenderly cared for by her husband and daughter, and other members of her family.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the house, and 2:30 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church, when the pastor, the Rev. Carl Olson, preached the funeral sermon; using a portion of the 86th Psalm as his text, which was a favorite Bible passage of Mrs. Benson.
Mrs. Bertha Anderson and Mrs. Ellen Anderson, sang "Rock of Ages" in the Swedish language and Eldon Anderson sang "Jesus, Saviour, Pilot Me." Both numbers were accompanied at the piano by Florence Gustafson.
The pallbearers were deacons of the church, Elmer and Oscar Flesburg, Floyd Smith, Elof Hylin, Albin Hultgren and Axel Nelson.
Many and beautiful were the floral offerings received from far and near, bespeaking the esteem in which she was held, and sympathy for the bereaved ones.
Burial was in the Salem Cemetery (First Lutheran Cemetery #1) north of Varna, IL.
