Bio Photo A CALLING
What calls us to find the ancestors? It goes beyond a simple curiosity. We are taken over, compelled, as if possessed by something bigger than us that is begging to be revealed. There is one of us in most every family, called to be the scribe. I am but one of the many in the long line of storytellers of our clan. Like others I am called to gather and assemble the ancestors—to breathe life back into them as far back as we can reach. We take what we find and chronicle the facts of their existence, remembering their names and who they were and what they did. They are the sum of who we are, for without them, we would not exist. We greet those who came before us, restoring their place in the familial line. We scribe their stories and their histories. We search for them in public libraries, county records, and weed-filled or well-kept cemeteries. We comb through yellowed newspapers, family archives, and lovely old letters and photo albums. We find them! And in finding them—we find ourselves.

I love Find A Grave. It's like Facebook for the dead. A heartfelt thanks to all the Find A Grave photographers who've fulfilled my requests for headstone pictures and to the others of you who've generously transferred your pages of the family to me. I am grateful for and enjoy the friendships, camaraderie, assistance and humor that passes between and among us. Your gifts have filled missing gaps, corrected many errors and answered numerous questions. My family thanks you too, as this is really a gift to them.

Anyone who fulfilled headstone requests and transferred me pages prior to Jan 2013 and have not heard back from me, please don't think me ungrateful or thoughtless; my back-up hard drive crashed and I lost 9,000 emails of genealogy correspondence. Arrghh.

In Memoriam:
"With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world at the moment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person, which almost went unnoticed last week. Larry LaPrise, the man who wrote "The Hokey Pokey", died peacefully at age 93. The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin. They put his left leg in... and then the trouble started."

Note: Sorry, sometimes I just can't stop myself... Catherine

My brother and I are researching our family lines—he for years—I of late. Compiling four volumes, our records span from the sailings to America to our parent's generation. Our main lines:

Henry HOY, Jr. & Mary Ann SMITH
Finley McLaren CHAMBERLIN & Emily S. HOY
Isaac W. CHATFIELD & Eliza Ann HARRINGTON
Mathew Sylvester CLEMENS & Barbara NIGON

I am also working on the SEVENAU/CLEMENT/KELLOGG & MACDONALD/McCARTNEY lines.

Always happy to connect with kin and fellow researchers to compare notes. It takes a village. Other than a handful of close friends, I am related either directly, by parallel, or by marriage to every person I hold a Find A Grave page for. Sometimes related quite distantly—but one person leads to another and then the next thing I know I've done or added information to pages for all those folks too.

I've thought about this: obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told how the person died.

Wow! You have done an outstanding job on the relatives on Find A Grave. We had already figured out that James and Jacq had married (her at age 16) but neat to read more about their lives. Hope I can do as well with ours. Thanks for linking to his parents.

Okay, I should be working and I should be grading papers, but just figured something out. The Joseph Von Rueden you asked for a grave photo of in Calvary Grand Forks, has the same life years as the Calvary, Traill, Joseph Von Rueden. Hence, I'm thinking, you placed him in GF when he is actually in the rural cemetery with others of the family. So, in my thoughts, the Calvary GF request has already been fulfilled?

Clement Family Line
Hi Cathy…

My 3rd great grandparents were Jacob and Catherine (Heinrich) Clement. They lived in the Chester Township area of Wabasha County in Minnesota from about 1870 to after 1880. Then my research trail runs cold. I can't find out anything more about them.

Here's what I have:
• Jacob Clement b. 7/20/1814 in Messancy, Luxembourg (later to become Messancy, Luxembourg County, Belgium after Belgium took over that part of Luxembourg in the 1830's)
• Married to Catherine Heinrich on 6/24/1835 in Messancy
• Catherine was born on 2/2/1809
• The 1860 census shows them living in Sheldon, Wyoming Cty, NY
• The 1870 and 1880 census shows them living in Chester Township, Wabasha Cty, MN

They must have died and were buried in the Chester Township area after 1880, but I can't find anything on them after 1880.

Have you researched this Clement line, and do you know anything to help me fill in the gaps?

I may be able to go back to the cemetery, but it won't be for a bit. Just thought that if he fit within your paperwork, I could assuredly add the dates. Oh, well. It was hideously muddy when I was there a couple of weeks ago, and I'm always leery about mucking about with other folks' stones. He was buried beside Joseph Von Rueden.
