RE: African American research
Hi there!

Somehow I veered off into African American research. Thinking I knew AA fairly decently, it made me realize that I was ignorant of so many things!

For the past 15+ years we rent a shack at the beach in RI. Two years ago, I went to a talk at the library given by a Friend/Quaker. It got my inner-nerd put into high gear!!

Yesterday, I went to Newport (RI) to look at an African burial ground. No matter how many long time residents that I ran across--all walking their dogs-- no one knew of the burial grounds. I Finally found it in the corner of the larger cemetery. The stones were beautiful and I couldn't believe...I don't know...I was blown away. The stones are for Slaves (Servants) put up by their slave holder. (I have to look into some of the back stories.)

They are from the early 1700s. It made me realize how important it is to get them recorded for prosperity.

Thanks for writing,
Maureen NYC nerd

RE: Dan Alexson's memorial
First off thank you for the condolences. Second, I am active but have had problems with my laptop that are still not resolved plus we live in the middle of nowhere in Chaparral New Mexico and internet out here is spotty at times.

I finally figured it out. Can I ask why you were all the way up here taking photos if you volunteer for Horry County?

I went back out and took 70 more photos of this cemetery but unfortunately I can't figure out how to get them from my new iPhone onto the website. I tried for several hours and finally gave up. There are many graves there that have never been photographed however. I only got to about 1/3 of them.

There's a mistake with the information you have for Arthur G. Bellamy. His tombstone says he died on Jan. 2 and you have Jan. 1.

Oh yes there were many you could read and just as many you could not read.

I was able to go down to the area away from the church and look for the requested stones but there were so many with no markers or that had been reclaimed by the woods. I actually found one burial marker with a name on it thrown into the woods and a headstone that had only about 3 inches of the very top of it still exposed. Another had a large animal hole right next to one of the cement grave covers. I found about 30 metal wreath stands as well as old flower arrangements just thrown into the woods. I've never seen an active cemetery in such disrepair. Very sad.

RE: Boleslaw
Susan,
You put his plot as "Poor". In Holy Name's poor section they do not allow individual headstones or markers of any kind because there are several people buried in each grave.
Just last year they placed that "Rest in Peace" headstone to accommodate everyone in that section. They also removed all the row markers and more or less leveled the ground and put grass seed down.
I have not been out there this year to see what else they have upgraded or downgraded, but I do hope they put the row markers back so anyone looking to pay their respect could at least find the general area of their loved one.
Any questions, just ask.

death certificate for Sarvis & Neely?
In all your Horry County searches, have you run across death certificates for my great-grandparents, Sharlotte (Charlotte) Ada Sarvis Neely (born 1854) and Joseph E. Neely (born 1862)? Thanks for any help.

My pleasure. Belin UMC is such a beautiful little cemetery, and I look forward to any opportunity to spend a few minutes there.

Cemeteries in the LANE,SC AREA
Hello Susan,
I have knowledge about the cemeteries in this area. Unfortunately, many records/markers were destroyed and some Misplaced during hurricane Hugo. There are a lot more remains buried in these cemeteries than there are markers. Sadly, a lot of the history recorded can be found in family collections of obituaries and oral history without markers to verify or confirm at the actual cemeteries.. You may find that those who volunteer may not find any evidence that the graves/markers actually exists at the grave sites. I have also heard this to be true in the surrounding communities, but can only speak assuredly to the area in which I reside.

I am not sure what can be done to capture information of where graves once were, but wanted to make you aware of this information.
Thank you for all you do

Dear Susan,

Thank you for bringing the matter of the duplicated cemetery to our attention. I am taking actions to have the cemeteries merged, and I am thankful to fellow Find A Grave member PC for being understanding, as I see your post about this on her contributor page.

RE: Dup cemetery
It appears the others did much more work and entered more data than I did, so I'd rather their work stand. This was a hobby - I'd rather defer to those that put time into entering data as they did. A "blending" by the F.A.G. administrators would contribute so much more for those that come searching in the future.

Hi Susan,

I've already transferred the memorials of the Blue family to John Maxwell except the ones I wanted to retain.
