Elizabeth was the daughter of Elias and Elizabeth Thornbrough Harvey. She was born in Indiana, one of ten children: Oliver W., Michael Howard, Thomas John, William H., Mary Ellen (Mrs. Joseph Miller), Martha Jane, Sara Ann, Milton S. , and John Wesley.

In 1859 she migrated with her family by covered wagon from Milton, Wayne, Indiana to Edinberg, MO. While some of the famly moved on to Haddam, KS others settled in Knox and Grundy County, MO.

She was married to Stephen Avery, a Civil War veterern. They had no children.

In the latter years of her life, she lived with her great-nephew and his wife, Alfred and Fannie Harvey.
