Oliver W. Harvey was the oldest son of Elias and Elizabeth Thornbrough Harvey. He was born in Wayne County, IN into a well established family who were at that time of the Quaker faith. His childhood was spent as a farm boy in Indiana where he grew to manhood. He married Lydia Thomas on March 07, 1853 in Rush County, IN.

In 1859 he migrated with his parents, siblings, wife and children to Grundy County, MO. Then at the beginning of the Civil War, the famly moved to Brown County, IL. It was here that he and two brothers (Milton and Thomas J.) enlisted in support of the Union in the Civil War; his father served in the administrative office there. Oliver enlisted in the 84th Regiment, Illinois Infantry, Company D. He mustered out on September 1, 1861. He was a corporal. He died on April 14, 1863 of chronic disease in Columbus, Hickman County, KY leaving his wife and three children: Jane Helen (1854-1924), Charles William (1857-1948), and Mary E. (1861-1864).

It is assumed that his body was buried in KY, but as of yet no information has been found on his burial site.
