Leon Barber age 88 a former Connersville resident passed away at the Otterbein Retirement Community in Lebanon, Ohio on Thursday April 17, 2014.

He was born June 10, 1925 in Elwood, IN, the son of the late Weldon and Opal Gooding Barber.

Leon is a graduate of the Alexandria High School.

At the age of 16 he began work at the original location of Cox Market in Alexandria, IN. He worked there until coming to Connersville in 1952 to open the second location of Cox Market. He worked as manager of the Connersville store until his retirement in 1988. During his career he also became a part owner of the Cox Market company.

During his time in Connersville he was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Connersville Kiwanis Club and the Brookville Sailing Association.

Leon enjoyed traveling, sailing, bicycling and gardening.

He is survived by two sons and daughters in law, Richard & Janice Barber of Auburn, IN and Michael & Stephanie Barber of Cincinnati; a brother Jack Barber and wife Pat of Alexandria; 5 grandchildren, Elizabeth Barber, Luke Barber, Melissa Baker, Robert Saley, and Nick Guerry, as well as 2 great grand children Rachel Saley and Miriam Saley.

In addition to his parents, Leon is preceded in death by his wife Johanna Burton Barber to whom he was married June 10, 1945 in Elwood, IN. She passed away on February 10, 2013. He is also preceded in death by a brother Robert Barber and his wife Edith.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Saturday April 19, 2014 at Urban-Winkler Funeral Home with Rev. Curtis Hurley of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Dale Cemetery.

Friends may visit at the funeral home on Saturday from 1:00 P.M. until the time of services.
