Robert L. "Bob" Barber, 82, Alexandria, died July 7, 2009, at Community Hospital Anderson, after an unexpected illness.

He was born Jan. 16, 1927, in Anderson, the son of Weldon Barber (a.k.a. Jack) and Jessie (a.k.a. Opal) (maiden - Gooding) Barber King, and resided in the Orestes/Alexandria area all of his lifetime.

Bob was a graduate of Alexandria High School Class of 1944. He served with the U.S. Merchant Marine and the United States Army during World War II. He worked for Delco Remy, formerly of Anderson, for eight years and Fisher-Body, formerly of Marion, for 28 years, retiring in 1983.

He was a member of the Alexandria Church of the Nazarene. Bob enjoyed bowling. One of his favorite pastimes was the time he would spend with his children and grandchildren reminiscing about the past.

Survivors include a son, William (Denise) Barber of Pendleton; a daughter, Betsy (Glenn) Hess of Fishers; two brothers, Jack (Pat) Barber of Alexandria, and Leon (Johanna) Barber of Lebanon, Ohio; three grandchildren, Lance Cpl. Kevin Hess serving with the U.S. Marines in Afghanistan, and Kayla and Krista Hess, both of Fishers; sister-in-law, Barbara Little of Anderson; his "Buddy dog" Bruiser; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1963; his mother in 2002; and his wife of 52 years, Edith "Perk" (Little) Barber in 2004.

Services will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Alexandria Church of the Nazarene, 1401 S. Harrison St., Alexandria, with Pastor Mark Diemer officiating. Interment will follow in the IOOF Cemetery in Alexandria with military honors provided by Elwood Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5782.
