James W. Cornelius, 94, of New Brighton, passed on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 while under the compassionate care of Veranda Place, Darlington. He was born June 30, 1918 in Liberty Township, son of the late Samuel and Elizabeth Rose (Kaufman) Cornelius. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during World War II.
James earned his undergraduate degree in Education, majoring in Mathematics, from Slippery Rock; and later his Master's of Education from the University of Pittsburgh. He enjoyed a rewarding career as a math teacher with the Monaca, New Brighton and Beaver Area School Districts.
After his retirement, he loved traveling, spending time outdoors and tending to his garden. James also felt fortunate to spend the winter months in Lehigh Acres, Florida.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Mary (Rosser) 'Mimi' Cornelius, on April 13, 2009; daughter, Eileen Cornelius; grandson, Brian Ragozzino; four brothers, William, John, Paul and Samuel, and his sister, Ruth Wimer.
James is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, David and Lisa Cornelius, Bluffton, SC; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Kathy and Greg Kemerer, New Brighton; Cindy Cornelius, Rochester, and Nancy and David Brewer, Castle Rock, CO; five grandchildren, Brighan, Joanna and Paul Cornelius, Matthew Ragozzino, and Daniel Brewer, and two great-grandchildren, Carter Ragozzino and Isabella Cornelius.
Military Honors will be presented Saturday in the funeral home at 10 a.m. by members of the Beaver County Special Unit. His funeral service will immediately follow. Private entombment will be in Sylvania Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum.
