John P. Schroeder, 83, is Buried Wednesday
The victim of heart disease and the infirmities of old age, John Peter Schroeder passed away Sunday morning at 2 o'clock at his home at 729 Third street here. He had reached the advanced age of 83 years.
The deceased was born Sept. 8, 1848, in Hessen-Nasen, Germany. At the age of 23 years he came to this country, making his home first in Chicago. After a short residence there, he moved to Kiel, where he spent the remainder of his life. In his early days he took an active part in the affairs of the then tiny village of Kiel, having served on the village board for a period of eight years.
On July 9, 1877, he was united in marriage to Miss Bertha Dreher in Kiel. It was his second marriage. After this marriage, Mr. Schroeder conducted a general store and drugstore in the present Fred Sieling building on East Fremont street. This business was conducted until 1902, when the couple disposed of the property and moved into the home which the deceased since occupied. His wife passed away July 27, 1927. Almost until the time of her death she continued to dispense drugs at her home.
Four children were born to the couple. Surviving are Berthold Schroeder of Chicago, and Mrs Hertha Bauer at home. One daughter, Mrs. Alma Pike of Chicago, passed away Nov. 11, 1924, and another daughter, Mrs. Angeline Martin of Cedarburg, died 41 years ago. There are four grandchildren, and one nephew and three nieces who live in Germany.
Mr. Schroeder was a charter member of the Kiel Fire Department, which organization attended the funeral in a body. The last rites were held at 9 a. m. Wednesday from the home, and at 9:30 at the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic church, the Rev. A. A. Roder officiating. Burial was in the Kiel cemetery, where his wife rests. - 1932
