Retired Senior Chief Petty Officer, Thomas Gordon "Tom" Benton, Sr., 67 years and 5 days of age, of Jacksonville, Florida, departed this life unexpectantly early Friday morning, November 6th, 2015 at the Baptist Medical Center.

Tom was born in Hamilton, Ohio, on Monday, November 1st, 1948, son of the late Richard Thomas "Dick" Benton and Beulah Benton. Tom graduated from Eaton High School in Eaton Ohio. He enjoyed drawing, scuba diving, fishing, camping, being out doors, and traveling.

Tom was a retired Senior Chief Petty Officer having served his country in the United States Marine Corps from July 1967 until July 1969 where he held the rank of Corporal. Tom was last stationed at Command -7th Engineers in San Francisco, serving during the Vietnam War, and earned a Purple Heart. He later served in the United States Navy from November 1973 until March 1987, holding the rank Engineering Aid-Senior Chief Petty Officer. Throughout his military career, Thomas earned numerous ribbons and medals and he was an Expeditionary Warfare Specialist. He was a retired "Seabee" meaning a member of the United States Naval Construction Forces. At the time of his death, he was employed at the NAV FAQ in Jacksonville, Florida. Tom was looking forward to retiring in February of 2016, and spending time with his family and doing all the things he enjoyed.

Tom was survived by his loving wife of thirty-three years, Lisa Peña Cardenas Benton; two daughters, Deborah Kay "Deby" (and Mike) Blackstone of Somerset, Kentucky and Angela Maria Young of Jacksonville, Florida; one son, Thomas Gordon Benton, Jr. of Jacksonville, Florida; two step-daughters, Vickie (and Joe) Stone of Somerset, Kentucky and Brenda Bennett of Douglasville, Georgia; one step-son, Duane Myers of Hiram, Georgia; four grandchildren, Meghan Benton (and Josh) Turner of Lexington, Kentucky, Amber Still of Somerset, Kentucky, and Olivia Young and Logan Young both of Jacksonville, Florida; step-grandchildren, Brian Stout of Atlanta, Georgia, Jennifer (and Tim) Girdler, Steven Stout and Ashley Stone, all of Somerset, Kentucky, Jason (and Danielle) Collier of Dallas, Georgia, Matt (and Holly) Collier and Andy Myers, both of Charleston, South Carolina, Chris (and Stephanie) Myers of Hiram, Georgia, and Taylor Bennett and Travis Bennett, both of Atlanta, Georgia; one great-granddaughter, Aurora Mitchell of Somerset, Kentucky; two step-great-granddaughters, Adyia Collier and Cordi Collier; one step-great-grandson, Ethan James Girdler of Somerset, Kentucky; one brother, Richard "Dick" (and Donna) Benton of Fort Worth, Texas; three sisters, Sandra Borradaile of Greenville, Ohio, Beverly (and Fred) Campbell of Freeport, Pennsylvania, and Carol Benton of Fairhaven, Ohio; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends who mourn his passing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dick Benton, who departed this life on June 21st, 1995 and Beulah Frances Benton, who departed this life on October 23rd, 1995; one sister, Linda Frances Peters, who departed this life on January 19th, 2010; his paternal grandparents, Virgil Benton and Lillian Dunn Benton; and his maternal grandparents, Isaac Larison and Leila Elkin Larison.

In accordance with Tom's wishes cremation services were preformed with the Neptune Society in Jacksonville, Florida in charge of the arrangements.

Graveside services with military honors were held on Tuesday, December 1st, 2015 followed by burial in the Jacksonville National Cemetery in Duval County, Florida.
