CALEB FARBER
Caleb Farber was born at Columbus, Ohio, Nov. 4, 1847, and departed this life at Hoxie, Kansas, December 3, 1922, at the age of 75 years and 29 days.
When a lad of seven he, with his parents, left the Ohio home and came to Lucas county, Iowa. Here he remained until he was a mature man when in 1886 he and his wife moved further west, locating in Hoxie, Kansas.
On February 11, 1884, he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Bowen. To this union were born three children, all of whom survive the father. They are Ora, of Hoxie, Kan.; Mrs. Minnie Davis, of Merced, Calif., and Elbert, of Chicago.
He is also survived by three brothers, Albert, of Valentine, Neb.; J. B., of St. Joseph, Mo.; Edward, of Hoxie, Kan., and three sisters, Mrs. Katherine Carpenter, of Akron, Colo.; Mrs. Minnie Wilson, of Ottumwa, Ia.; and Mrs. Mary Curtis, of Russell, Ia., and one granddaughter, Patricia.
Mr. Farber was the oldest in a family of 13 children. He was a sturdy pioneer. Western Kansas was a new and sparsely settled country in the days when he and his wife took up their claim in that state. He had followed the business of farming all his life and was rated as one of the successful farmers in his part of the state.
He had remained active until two years ago when his advanced years and failing health compelled him to retire from the farm. He had enjoyed good health all his life until recently, when he developed a serious heart malady that resulted in his death suddenly last Sunday morning.
Mr. Farber was a man who enjoyed a wide acquaintance and was admired by all who knew him. He was ever willing and glad to be of any helpful service to anyone. In his home life as a boy and a young man, he helped to make the living for the large family and in many ways proved himself a dutiful son and thoughtful brother. As a husband and father he commanded the respect and love of his family. In his business dealings and associations with his neighbors he was always striving to be considerate and fair.
His going will be missed by the many who had learned to know him. For 30 years, lacking one day, he was a member of the Odd Fellows and as a fraternal brother he was found to be faithful.
The funeral service was conducted in the Presbyterian church in his old home of Chariton, Iowa, December 8, at 2 o'clock, by the Rev. C. W. McClelland, interment taking place in the Chariton cemetery.
