Johnathan was born to Permelia "Amelia" (Seabaugh) and James "Jim" Welty on December 7th after his twin Johnson. He had at least two more siblings, one being George.

1880 found the family living in White Water, Missouri and by 1900 the family was in Coalgate (at the time part of the Choctaw Nation of Indian Territory). In the 1900 Census Johnathan's occupation was Coal Miner and the family had a 14 year old servant girl living with them as well.

He was married to Jenny Luella (Burton) Hampton at her home on February 2, 1919 by P. G. Brannan a minister of the Church of Christ in Centrahoma, Oklahoma. Their marriage certificate was signed by O. L. Eskridge and Johnathan's brother George.

Together Luella and Johnathan had two children, Agnes Louise (1920-1979) and Cody (1923-2006). This is in addition to the five children (Golden, Anna Mae, W. A., Blanche and Woodrow) Luella already had.

Information in the Family Bible says that Johnathan died in Coalgate, but other information indicates that it was Denver, Colorado. Apparently Johnathan abandoned his family at some point in the mid 1920's, currently very little is known about his life.
