George and his siblings were raised in White Water, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. There George attended school until fourth grade. By 1900 the family had settled in Coalgate, Indian Territory. George lived mainly in Coal County, Oklahoma for the rest of his life and supported his family by working as a coal miner.
On March 3, 1901 in Coalgate, Oklahoma George was married to Eva Mae Dawley. Together they had at least eight children, all of them being born in Coalgate, Nora Mae, William Marshall, Samuel James, Eugene Victor, Millie Belle, Roland Samuel, Gardner George and Margaret Marie.
All the children went on to marry and give George grandchildren. Nora married Melton Brewer, William married Rachel Love, Samuel married Zeffy Smith, Eugene married Christine Turner and Jewel Blamey, Millie married John Lynch, Roland married Marie Walker, Gardner married Louise Self and Margaret married E.F. Midkiff.
