Johnson was the first son born to Permelia (Saupaugh) and James Welty with his twin brother Johnathan being the second child. He had two other younger siblings, one of them being a brother George.

Johnson and his siblings were raised in White Water, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. By 1900 the family had settled in Coalgate, Indian Territory.

On September 17, 1903 Johnson was married to Mary Yalch age 17 in Atoka, Oklahoma by J A Trickey. They had at least three children Pearl, Mary and James.

Johnson stayed in Coalgate after his wife, Mary, passed away; he stayed until at least 1935. The 1940 Census shows he was living with his daughter Mary and her family in Clio City, Michigan.
