Andrew Jackson "Jack" Shull was born in 1876 in Claiborne Co., Tennessee. (There are also reports that he was born in Missouri) to John Finley Shull, Jr and Phoebe Jane Brooks. He was the 10th of 12 children to be born. He married Rosa Elizabeth Van Horn, daughter of Thomas James "TJ" Van Horn and Cassie/Carrie Patterson/Bowman (reports of both names) on August 23 1896 in Barry County, Missouri.

They had one son: Andrew Jackson Shull, Jr who was born April 28 1898 in Butterfield, Barry Co., Missouri after his father had died, which was from a bite from a rattlesnake in November of 1897. Gangrene had set up in A. J. Shull, Sr's hand and his father John F. Shull wanted to amputate it to save his son's life but A. J. Shull, Sr wouldn't let him which resulted in him dying.

Rosa went on to marry L. Monroe Bullington, who raised Andrew, Jr as his own son. Andrew Jr. moved to the state of Oregon in 1912 to live with relatives, which included his father's brother Tison "Tice" Shull.
