As a young girl Catherine migrated with her parents Joseph and Margaret Newmeier. The family settled in the Menasha area of Winnebago County and later in the Unity community in Clark County where she lived with first husband William Mahoney. She was widowed with a young daughter, Maggie when she married August Kroening. They farmed in Marathon County and produced five more children before his death in 1918. Catherine "Katie" lived another 25 years in Marathon County and died in her home in the town of Cleveland.
